The last day of our trip to Vigo was very good. It wasn't very windy so we had to motor for a lot of the last day of the trip. I (Fergus) did a night watch with Mummy and Tom. There were lots and lots of stars, but I fell asleep before the end. Fortunately Mummy and Tom stayed awake!
On the last day, a few miles from the coast of Vigo, it went really calm and about 10 miles offshore, we saw a group of 10 or more fin whales feeding. One came up really close to the boat, no more than a boat length away.
We arrived on Wednesday afternoon. We are berthed in a marina in Vigo.
We tidied the boat up after the trip, had a beer and went out for dinner with Tom. On Thursday morning, Tom left to get his flight home from Porto. We did some shopping and laundry and did home school.
Yesterday (Friday) we hired a car and drove up to Santiago de Compostella. It had lots of old buildings, a big cathedral and a big hotel.
We had a nice lunch of lasagne, tortilla (Spanish Omlette), croquettes and paella. We wandered around the old town and visited the cathedral. It was very cool, it had a huge organ and lots of gold statues.
In the afternoon we had an ice cream in the park.
Lots of people walk the Camino de Santiago, a pilgrimage from lots of places all over Europe to the cathedral in Santiago. Some people do it because of their faith and others because it is a fun and challenging walk. It was cool seeing lots of happy people arriving in Santiago at the end of their walk. Daddy said some of them would have been walking for about 2 months every day. Our granny Mimi walked part of the Camino a few years ago.
Today (Saturday) we drove to Baiona. It had a big castle and a couple of nice sandy beaches. We played on the beach for a bit, then we walked up a hill to a ststue of the Virgin Mary.
There was a little tapas restaurant besiode it and we shared anchovies with tomatoes, sardines, chicken empanadas, steak and chips and prawns.
We walked up to the statue, and on the way down we saw geckos on the path.
We went back to one of the beach bars to get an ice cream, then we left Baiona and drove to a viewpoint in the hills. We had a lovely view from Baiona to Vigo. Then we drove back to Vigo and the boat.
We are waiting for a new vang to be delieverd which is supposed to arrive on Tuesday, so we're expecting to be in Vigo until then. Once the delivery arrives, we'll leave and head for Porto Santo just north of Madeira. That should take us about 4 days.
