Crossing the channel
We left Yarmouth very early while me and Fergus were still in bed. When we woke up at about 5.30am we could still see the Isle of Wight. We came up on deck at about 7am.
We motorsailed to Alderney and arrived about 2 o'clock. Roughly half way across the channel we had a Spanish pirate ship go past us.
After we got to Alderney we picked up a mooring buoy, then went ashore and played on the beach.
Driving Megapus
Our tender, the small inflatable boat that we use to go ashore, is called "Megapus". Today we tried our electric outboard for the first time. Mummy said it was so quiet she thought I had turned it off. I drove it from the boat to the pontoon this morning. The motor is very good.
Cycling around Alderney
We walked up the hill to town and hired bikes. The bike was mostly good but the saddle was rubbish and my bum got really sore! We cycled to both ends of the island, but we missed out the zigzag path that we struggled up last time we were here. We cycled 9.8 miles altogether. We stopped for a snack and watched the gannet colony. Right at the end we got some ice cream.
Roman Fort
About half way round the island we stopped for lunch at a Roman fort. We met some very nice archaeologists and saw some old Roman walls in a trench they were excavating. The fort has been changed over the centuries, and is now behind a wall built by the Germans in World War 2 to stop the allies invading and taking the island back.
There was also an Iron age excavation site nearby.
